We chose to look at the statistic “The total costs related to gun injuries and deaths daily amounts to 3 million dollars from public money. It amounts to over 1 billion anually of taxpayer money. ”
Rather than look at it from a daily perspective, we compiled it to an annual number. This totaled at over one billion dollars in taxpayer money being used for gun related healthcare costs. We then divided this into three categories to show the scale of this number.
We were particularly interested in the comparison to Pell grants. This is a social program that is currently being debated heavily. To compare the number of grants that the government could offer to students if the didn’t have to spend this money on healthcare shows that by changing priorities we could help so many more people, especially the ones that are most affected by gun violence.
