Individual Project Brief- A Public Health Campaign

The goal of my individual exploration is to challenge the public’s ideas and perceptions surrounding guns. Gun violence, while disturbing, is something that has become quite normalized in our society. We are saddened to hear about an accidental shooting where a child was killed, but not surprised.

In the 1990s, anti-smoking campaigns were successful in catalyzing social and cultural change. The behavior and perception surrounding smoking, which was just as, if not more, normalized as guns are today, changed dramatically in a short amount of time. This public health campaign was successful in causing the public to consider smoking in a new way. What began as a series of images showing the harmful health effects of smoking led to laws regarding smoking in public places.

My goal is to use the methods involved in the anti-smoking campaigns to create a similar public health campaign around guns and gun safety. How would the world look if everyone had a gun? If no one had a gun? How will a child who has been shot look in 10 years? How would future Americans look if we became better physically adapted to use a gun? To avoid gunshots? How can statistics be emphasized in surprising or exaggerated ways to spark debate, questions, discussion?

Through the creation of a public health campaign, I hope to challenge the existing thoughts and perceptions surrounding guns and gun safety and begin to understand whether such a strategy can lead to cultural and behavioral change.

Statistic Visualization

If 6 People are shot 5 live (1 dies)”

As we were discussing this statistic, we became interested in the idea of how it relates to time and how to get these individuals to relate to death and living as two things, each with serious consequences.

We also were inspired by http://spotcrime.com/pa/pittsburgh/daily where you can see thesedifferent crimes happen to a date, but when those locations are really related to a place, by a photo, how that changes how a person relates to it. We also became interested in communicating how the story continues, is it possible to show the hospital visit, the psychological issues, the funeral costs.

Why Gun ‘Control’ Is Not Enough

This article is from Opinionator Blog at New York Times. The article argues that gun advocacies is not enough and needs more explanation in big picture. What gun advocacies claim is the idea that the unarmed must arm themselves. Yet this explains that as more individual acquire guns, the power of the police declines, as personal security becomes more a matter of self-help until everyone is armed. Gun advocates further problems arise: people are more likely to get shot by mistake or by accident instead of getting into fistfight. They also explains in regards of self defense, the gun advocacies should have a reasonable logic that guns are necessary or even useful for self-defense when there would be far fewer occasions in real world.

Individual Project Brief

What will your individual exploration of the issues in this class focus on?

My individual exploration will focus on an intersection of 2 themes- statistics versus personal stories, and the spreading of information and understanding. When trying to educate others about any given problem, there is a common issue that describing it through statistics doesn’t show the human side of the issue, and showing individual stories doesn’t describe the weight of the issue. I want to work to bridge that gap and connect these two methods. I also want to create a tool that allows others to share their stories and allow them to spread information and understanding.

What is it that you want to know?

I want to know how best to communicate every aspect of the issue we’re dealing with. Users should be well aware of both the devastation that each individual that has dealt with gun violence feels as well as the wide range of people that are affected in this way.

What is it that you want to do?

I want to create a tool that does 2 things- enables the community of Pittsburgh to share stories, connect as a community, and learn to work together to overcome hardships, and shows how issues can be visualized with the intersection of wide-scope statistics and individual stories.

What will your reference material be for this? (readings, designers, writers etc.)

I will be looking closely at some of the resources we’ve collected as a class including various visualizations about gun violence and gun control, in order to gain an understanding of what aspects of the visualization they did well and where they were lacking. Similarly, I will look for any kind of visual representation of individuals and their stories. I hope to find some kind of statistical record relating to gun violence in Pittsburgh, that I could use as my data for my project.

What will the material outcome be?

A website and community tool where users can submit their stories, along with pictures, and answers simple questions about their experiences with gun violence. The website will be built to automatically compile the user submitted data into a visualization of some kind, tying in the overall statistics and the individuals’ stories. Ideally, visualizations will be dynamic and able to be filtered in many different ways, to engage users and help them see the problem in different ways.

What is the scope of this investigation? How big will it be? How many components, words, minutes?

Hopefully, it will be a fully built and fully usable website, likely built using WordPress or some other content management system. Should time run short, I will dial back the scope of the project to be simply a subset of the full website to demonstrate the idea behind it, or in lieu of that, just visual mockups of what the concept entails.

What is your timeline for progress through this?

The first step will be research- looking into what other people have done for similar problems, and I will spend roughly one week on this. After that, I will iterate a breadth of ideas for my final product, and develop a certain amount of depth for each one before picking a final direction. I will spend 2-3 weeks on this. At this point, I will work in parallel on (1) refining, critiquing, and repeating my visual and interactive design, as well as (2) the actual web development needed to make the site. This will continue for the rest of the project until completion.

How will you know that you are making progress on this?

I will be able to recognize progress made on my project through sharing with others- whether it’s with classmates, teachers, friends, or citizens of Pittsburgh, I will try to get impressions of other people as I work to help keep my work on track.

How will you measure your success in realizing your ambition?

When the project is finished (or nearly finished, for additional feedback), I hope to share it with citizens of Pittsburgh, particularly individuals and communities that we will work with through the semester. At the very least, I will be hosting my finished website on my personal domain, although I hope to get a dedicated domain for it to allow citizens of Pittsburgh to explore its full use.

screen-shot-2013-02-16-at-1-49-42-pm

This is a screen shot of post someone I know made on facebook. The post that they made is a list of reasons why men prefer guns over women. When Is particularly disturbing to me about this post is how it objectifies women. I was shocked to see that when I saw there no one was posting anything in protest to this post and the post was actually racking up likes from all men. I took the initiative to share my opinion and comment on the post. While I don not know the person that posted it particularly well, I felt the need to say something in opposition to it because people not speaking up is what allows these attitudes to be perpetuated.

Legislation & the Gun Industry

In case you needed anymore convincing that the problem of gun violence is extremely interconnected in America.

This article by Business Insider has three interactive maps (using 2012 data):

  • how many people are employed in the gun industry in each of the states
  • how many background checks the FBI did on people wanting to buy guns in each state
  • how the number of background checks done by the FBI increased or decreased from 2011

And here’s some important numbers from the article:

  • in 2012, the American gun industry totaled about $12 billion
  • in 2011, American gun companies paid more than $5 billion in federal, state and excise taxes
  • 98,759 people were employed by the gun industry in 2012
  • there are 3,505 people employed in the gun industry in Pennsylvania
  • the FBI did 19,463,862 background checks in 2012 for people wanting to buy guns (over 3 million more than 2011)
  • 968,534 people wanted to buy guns in PA in 2012 (249,600 more than in 2011)

Lifetime gun owner, level headed thinker in favor of gun control

Joe McLean has lived his whole life with guns, even using a rifle to successfully protect his home from a burglar. Yet, even he is moved by Obama’s speeches on guns and is in favor of gun control. He recognizes that it is simply a matter of keeping citizens of the United States safe, and that too many people just follow a skewed interpretation of the second amendment. He says a major hurdle in reaching useful legislation for gun control is the extremist leaders of the NRA effectively baring any new legislation to be passed at all.
